This course is aimed at people interested in learning and developing skills and techniques to communicate visually. Throughout the course, you will learn about some of the key skills involved in being a calligrapher.

Entry Requirements: None. This course is suitable for beginners. Sessions are a mixture of tutor-led talks, demonstrations, and practically learning calligraphy techniques. The course is about learning the basics from perfecting drills to learning alphabets and letter formation as well as how to connect letters the correct way to form words. Attendees can expect to create their own calligraphy project, perfecting their lettering and layout styles and exploring various calligraphy methods and materials.

Course Content

Week 1 - Welcome!
Introductions; posture and pen holding, learning those beginners practice drills, calligraphy supplies to get you started, learning your alphabet.

Week 2
- Let’s get connected:
Weekly practice drill warm-ups to increase muscle memory and favourite drills. We will be learning about letter placement, spacing, variations and connections and starting forming your first words and sentences.

Week 3 - Be Good, Do Good, Feel Good
Learning various ways to write a simple quote.

Week 4 - The envelope challenge:
Using your placement and spacing skills to create some beautiful and perfectly post-able envelope calligraphy.

Week 5Final Project
Final project planning: Working towards the final outcome which is to be a calligraphic quote/lyrics poster or a project of your choice  student.

Week 6Practice, Practice, Practice
Learning your ABC’s / Back to the Future: Exploring and creating your very own alphabet to include in your final project including complementary lettering.

Week 7Working on your project 
A session devoted to working on individual projects.

Week 8 - We made it!  
Finishing our projects. Evaluation of the course, learner achievement and progression.

Materials and Equipment All participants will be supplied with a calligraphy starter kit, but are free to bring their own materials if they wish.
